What a BMS / Controls Commissioning Engineer does
A BMS / Controls Commissioning Engineer verifies the building management system, electrical power monitoring system and associated controls infrastructure. That begins with point-to-point checks — confirming every sensor, actuator and status point is wired, addressed and reading correctly — and moves into verification of the sequence of operations against the written control philosophy.
The harder work comes at integration. The engineer proves alarm generation and prioritization, trend logging and data retention, graphics accuracy, interlocks between cooling and power systems, and automatic responses to loss of utility, chiller failure, pump failure and high space temperature. Where an EPMS, DCIM or third-party monitoring platform is in scope, the integration between them must be tested too.
Because controls issues surface late and delay handover, clients value engineers who can read a controls submittal critically and challenge a sequence before it is loaded, rather than discovering the gap during a witnessed L5 test.
Typical range
£60–85K base (permanent) or £375–525 / day on contract

Which BMS platforms do Data Centre clients ask for?
Requirements vary by operator, but experience with the major building management and power monitoring platforms used on Mission Critical sites is expected, alongside an understanding of the open protocols used to integrate them. Clients care more about proven failure-sequence testing than platform brand alone.
When does BMS commissioning start on a Data Centre project?
Point-to-point verification usually runs in parallel with L3 pre-functional testing, well before integration. Sequence verification and failure-response testing then continue through L4 and become a central part of L5 integrated systems testing.
