What Does a Data Centre Commissioning Engineer Do?

A data centre commissioning (Cx) engineer proves that the electrical, mechanical and controls systems in a new data centre work as designed, under load and under failure scenarios. They run the L1 to L5 test program that gates the facility to handover.

Core responsibilities

  • Write and execute commissioning scripts (pre-functional, functional, IST).
  • Coordinate witness and hold points with the owner's team and CxA.
  • Own the Cx issues log and drive closure with the MEP contractors.
  • Support L4 subsystem integration and L5 whole-facility IST.

Career path

Cx Engineer → Senior Cx Engineer (L4/L5 competent) → Commissioning Manager → Commissioning Authority (CxA) or Cx Director. Contract routes typically pay more per day but require verified project references at the senior levels.

How do I get into data centre commissioning?

The two common routes are (1) moving across from general MEP or building systems commissioning, and (2) coming from a manufacturer or vendor commissioning role (UPS, switchgear, BMS) into a site-based Cx engineer position.

What is a CxA?

A Commissioning Authority (CxA) is the independent lead responsible for the commissioning process. On hyperscale builds this is typically a dedicated role or third-party firm providing oversight of the Cx contractor's delivery.
