What a Commissioning Engineer does
A Commissioning Engineer executes and documents the testing that takes plant from installed to proven. At L1 that means factory witness testing of switchgear, UPS modules, generators and chillers before they reach site. At L2 it is site acceptance and delivery inspection. L3 covers pre-functional checks and functional performance testing of individual systems, and L4 moves into system integration where electrical and mechanical systems are tested together.
By L5 the engineer is part of integrated systems testing: full load bank runs, utility failure simulations, generator start and load acceptance, UPS transfer, cooling recovery within thermal limits, and BMS response verification. Every result is captured against a script and a witness signature, and any deviation becomes a documented issue with a retest.
Strong Cx Engineers read a single line diagram and a sequence of operations with equal fluency, write clear test records under time pressure, and hold a witnessed test to its script when a subcontractor wants to move on. Most specialize with an electrical or mechanical bias while working across the full MEP scope.
Typical range
£55–85K base (permanent) or £350–525 / day on contract, depending on level

- Complete pre-functional checklists and functional performance tests
- Support load bank, black-building and failure-mode testing at IST
- Record results, raise deficiencies and manage retest close-out
- Work alongside CxA and client witness teams during formal testing

What do L1 to L5 commissioning levels mean for a CV?
They describe how far through the commissioning process the engineer has actually worked. L1 and L2 cover factory and site acceptance, L3 covers pre-functional and functional testing, L4 covers system integration and L5 covers integrated systems testing under load and failure. Clients hire against these levels, so stating them explicitly gets a CV shortlisted faster.
Do Cx Engineers need an electrical or mechanical background?
Either works. Most Data Centre Cx Engineers come from an electrical background covering switchgear, UPS and generators, or a mechanical background covering chillers, CRAHs, pumps and pipework. Clients want depth in one discipline plus enough breadth to follow the other through integrated testing.
Are Cx Engineer roles usually contract or permanent?
Contract dominates during delivery peaks, especially across the London, Slough, Manchester and Dublin corridors, where engineers are engaged on an hourly or day rate for a defined phase. Permanent roles are more common with commissioning consultancies, CxA firms and operators building in-house teams.
