Planning Engineer Staffing for Data Centre Projects
What a Planning Engineer does
A Planning Engineer develops the sequencing strategy and construction logic before it becomes a live CPM schedule, working with preconstruction, design and trade partners to establish a realistic baseline. On Data Centre work that means understanding equipment procurement lead times, commissioning dependencies and hall-by-hall phasing early enough to influence the design and procurement schedule.
Once the baseline is set, the Planning Engineer runs what-if scenarios, evaluates the schedule impact of design changes and procurement delays, and supports claims and delay analysis when disputes arise. They work closely with the Scheduler who maintains the live P6 file, but focus more on strategy and less on weekly updates.
Clients value planning engineers who can model the cost of a schedule decision before it is made, not just report the consequence after.
Typical range
£60–80K base (permanent) or £375–525 / day on contract

- Develop baseline sequencing strategy ahead of live schedule build-out
- Model what-if scenarios for design, procurement and delivery changes
- Support delay analysis and schedule impact assessments
- Advise preconstruction on phasing and commissioning dependencies
- Collaborate with the Scheduler on baseline and logic integrity
