What a Electrical Commissioning Engineer does
An Electrical Commissioning Engineer takes the power distribution path from utility intake through transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, static transfer switches, busbar and PDUs down to the rack, and proves each element behaves as designed both in isolation and under fault. That starts at factory witness testing of switchgear and UPS modules and continues through site acceptance, protection settings verification, primary and secondary injection, insulation resistance and functional testing.
The role peaks during integrated testing, where the engineer supports generator start and load acceptance, utility failure simulation, UPS transfer on loss of utility, load bank staging and black-building restoration. Coordination with the protection engineer, the generator vendor and the BMS team is constant, and every result is captured against the script and the witness matrix.
Clients consistently ask for engineers who understand selectivity and protection coordination rather than only checklist execution — the difference shows immediately when a test fails and someone has to diagnose why.
Typical range
£55–85K base (permanent) or £350–500 / day on contract
