What a Mechanical Commissioning Engineer does
A Mechanical Commissioning Engineer proves the cooling and heat rejection systems — chillers, dry coolers, pumps, chilled water distribution, valves, CRAHs, CRACs, in-row units, humidification and the associated controls. The scope starts with pipework flushing, chemical cleaning and pressure testing, moves through balancing and flow verification, and then into functional performance testing of each unit and system.
During integrated testing the mechanical engineer is central to the resilience story: chiller sequencing on loss of power, thermal ride-through, pump changeover, valve failure positions and the return of the space to setpoint inside the client's stated recovery window. Load banks place a real thermal load on the hall so the recovery curve can be measured rather than assumed.
The engineers who succeed here read a sequence of operations carefully, keep good relationships with the BMS team, and understand that a system that balances beautifully on paper still has to recover in the failure scenario the client will witness.
Typical range
£55–85K base (permanent) or £350–500 / day on contract

- Flushing, chemical cleaning, pressure testing and system fill verification
- Balancing, flow measurement and functional testing of chillers, pumps and CRAHs
- Verify chiller sequencing, changeover and failure-mode response
- Support load bank thermal testing and recovery-time validation at IST
- Close out mechanical deficiencies with retest evidence
